Part Two-Tension and Release

All music involves tension and release.  On the simplest level,

beginning a steady beat introduces some tension and ending

it is a release.   Tension and release can also

be expressed with tonality and rhythm.  With the best music,

the tension is exciting or poignant and the release, satisfying.

The youngest children intrinsically understand tension and

release.  It doesn't have to be explained to them.

When I exaggerate tension and release, children think it is

 funny.  It is also musical.

The moment I introduce tension and release, we are already

playing, whether we are singing,  using small motor skills

(hand clapping, hand patting, hand rubbing, hand rolling,

hand shaking, hand creeping) or using large motor skills

(walking, marching, galloping, jumping, crawling, hiding,

 stretching, reaching).            next
